crossbench peers

crossbench peers
The large grouping of peers who are not aligned to any political party and do not therefore take a party whip. They sit on the crossbenches, preferring to maintain their political neutrality. All House of Lords committees will have crossbench members, often individuals with a significant depth of knowledge and expertise in the work their committees undertake.
Unlike peers aligned to a party, the nearly 200 crossbenchers do not have a leader. They elect one of their members as a convenor who looks after their interests in the House. Due to their independence, they do not adopt any collective policy positions, speaking in debates and voting in divisions as individuals. There is no system of whipping for the crossbenchers, nor can there be as it would be highly unusual for the bulk of them to vote in one way.
